BREAKING NAILS
WHITE SPOTS ON YOUR NAILS
NOTE TO SMOKERS
DAIRY PRODUCTS
SUMMER SUN

Breaking/splitting/chipping nails.
These are an indication that your liver may need help, or can be a sign of calcium, zinc or essential fatty acids deficiencies.

Solution:
Eat broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, whole grains and all kinds of seeds including pumpkin, sunflower, sesamae and linseed. Drink two cups of nettle tea a day.

White spots on the nails.
These are a classic sign of zinc deficiency. By the time the white spots reach your nails, your zinc levels are pretty low.

Solution.
  1. Take one teaspoon of liquid algae daily.
  2. Take a tablet of zinc supplement daily.
  3. Snack on pumpkin and sunflower seeds for their high zinc content.

Note to smokers.
In addition to the usual warnings, remember that smoking strips your body of vital nutrients, prevents nutrient uptake from food, weakens your digestion, poisons your blood and wrinkles your skin!!

Coffee
Coffee contains caffeine (it is also present in tea and cola). When you drink too much coffee (even decaf) your blood pressure rises, it can stimulate skin aging and reduce the absorption of iron and zinc by up to 50%, which can compromise your immune system.

Solution.
Try to wean yourself off coffee slowly. Start drinking a rotation of herbal teas such as peppermint, chamomile and nettle, or simply squeeze some fresh fruit into hot water.

Dairy products.
Cow's milk is high in fat and the protein casein, which is hard for humans to digest properly. This is why cow's milk can trigger allergic responses such as asthma, earache, runny nose, catarrh, skin rashes, lethargy and irritability.

Some people lack the enzyme lactase which breaks down lactose in milk. If you are lactose intolerant you may suffer from bloating, wind, diarrhoea or constipation.

Solution
Instead try the more easily digestible alternative goat's milk, soy, rice, nut or oat milk.

If you cut out dairy foods, keep your calcium intake up by eating calcium-rich foods such as tofu, legumes, nuts, seeds and leafy greens.

SUMMER SUN
Prevention is better than cure
Now summer is upon us we must pay particular attention to looking after our skin. Here are my top tips!
  1. Ex-foliate your body with a scrub of loofah in the shower once or twice a week to remove all the dry dead cells. On your face, use a light scrub or peel once or twice a week to reveal fresh, new cells.
  2. Moisturise all over! Why not get into the habit of using  a sunscreen to do this job and then you'll be protected at all times!
  3. Use the highest SPF as possible (preferably between a 30 – 50). We live in the sun so most people will tan naturally anyway, so its best to do it slowly and safely (your tan will last longer!). Remember to reapply regularly especially if sunbathing.
  4. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin and yourself hydrated!
  5. If sitting in the sun, preferably do so under an umbrella. Always wear a hat to protect your head and face. Also wear sunglasses to protect the most delicate skin around the eyes. Why make crow's feet worse?
  6. It's true we all feel better with a tan, so why not fake it? There are some excellent products on the market these days and they will keep your skin healthier and younger looking for longer.
