“RUNNING FOR HIS LIFE IN SANTA POLA”

“Canons roar! Drums are beating! And seven thousand people are starting to run in the Santa Pola Half Marathon. Some are in fancy dress; some are pushing prams – one had twins in it! And there, determined to break his 2 hour 6 minute record of last year, is Jake Lowe, running on behalf of MABS Cancer Support Group.”  So says Jan Wright, a MABS Cancer Support Group Volunteer Carer reporting on the January 24th event.

Jake finished just 8 minutes faster than previously and under the two hours he had set himself. Well done Jake!

Jake was supported by friends and family as well as two wonderful MABS Volunteer Carers, Jan Wright and Angela Knapman and MABS Volunteer Driver, Rita Collins. The ladies admit to having a ball!

The rain help off until after the event and everyone gathered for photos in their MABS tee-shirts before Jake set off. Seven thousand people; a huge number to sort out but this years event went just as smoothly as it always has in the past thanks to brilliant organisation. Bands were playing, food and drink stalls were thriving; a really energetic atmosphere along the Santa Pola seafront and a wonderful community spirit.

Jake collected Euros 100 ‘on the day’ and is still counting the money that is coming in from his Coastal Press Magazine readers; and of course more is still coming in via the MABS Cancer Support Group website. We will announce the total in a few weeks time but meanwhile we want to say a huge ‘Thank you’ to Jake and his team and to our MABS Cancer Support Group ladies who set up this sponsorship opportunity.

MABS Cancer Support Group is registered charity number 7261. The charity offers support, kindness and love to cancer patients in the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. It was started in 1999 by five ladies who had suffered with breast cancer but had no one to turn to for advice and support. They decided that others should not have to worry like they did about translation between themselves and medical staff, translation of technical information about their cancer, transportation to and from hospital appointments and support for family and friends. The ladies were firmly determined to address all these things, and more, for cancer patients in the future. There are now seven branches of the charity, all with their Volunteer Carers, Volunteer Drivers and Volunteer Supporters, located from Valencia in the north to Marbella in the south. Please come and join us! We need you!

Anyone who has any form of cancer and who finds themselves alone and without support should contact the MABS Cancer Support Group on 965 794 083.
